I finally found a nice occasion to open my last Barrel Aged Old Numbskull this past August. This one was shared at La Bella on 8-25-09 with Joey and Danny (hope you enjoyed this b-day beer, buddy!). A 2005 vintage, bottle #182/223.

Poured a reddish-caramel color with very little carbonation. Light orange highlights on the sides of the glass.

There was a light bourbon aroma upfront but quite tamed with time now, vanilla, caramel, and toffee follow close by. Very malty on the nose with deep toast and multi-grain bread. The bourbon has really toned down now and just becomes an integrated part of the aroma instead of dominating it when fresh.

Super complex malt bomb. Toasted bread upfront with caramel, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, oak, booze, and light bourbon in the finish. The aftertaste is long with hints of earthy noble hops. Lots of dates, raisins, prunes, and fruitiness when the beer opens up. Chocolate corn flakes come to mind as well with some more chocolate cake and smores. Just like in the aroma, the bourbon now hides in the background, creating another layer of complexity.

No carbonation to talk about, but I'm not complaining as it works very well for this beer, a sipping beer for sure. Syrupy and coating on the palate. Drinking the whole 750ml by myself might take a while but I wouldn't complain if I had to do it.

props to enniskillen for this wonderful poured a hazey red with some orange sneaking in when held up to light.i could really pick up the bourbon aroma, along with the normal numbskull characteristics.the first taste brought on bourbon, then it followed up with some sweet candy, and then a bit of a tart aftertaste.i must say, this is REAL SMOOTH.considering the alcohol, and judging it against the original numbskull.its also extremely easy to drink.(this could be dangerous.)this is awsome.....nuff said!!!!RE-RATE 209/223 OF THE 2005 BATCH.nice bronze body with no head.the aroma is an awesome blend of vanilla, oak, bourbon, toffee, cotton candy, alcohol heat, caramel malts, and a hint of hops.the flavor blows me a way as blends everything i got from the aroma, plus some chocolate, almonds, and allspice.this is just as good as the first batch.ts almost like sipping on a fine blown away by the alesmith crew once again.

Bottle courtesy Westsidethreat :worship:

2004 Bottle 172/227 Taken straight out of the cellar.

A - Into the Reidel snifter for this one. An aggressive pour produces about a half inch of cream colored foamy head. All sorts of different sized bubbles. Reduces within about a minute into some whisps and floating clumps along with a healthy ring around the glass. Shows a reddish body with a slight haze to it.

S - Big, sweet and malty. Still some hops lingering around. Big boozy nose to it that digs deep into my nostrils. Caramel, toffee, vanilla, and big time bourbon here.

T - From the big boozy nose, I was really afraid that this would be over the top in the bourbon flavors, but it isn't. Starts with sweet malty tones of toffee and caramel. Ripe red fruits. Bourbon enters the picture and takes the tongue for a little side trip. Vanilla is nice and present from the wood. Bourbon is there, but is so much smoother than what this one smelled like. No really flavors of woodiness. Hops come on a bit towards the end, bringing excellent balance to the overall flavor.

M - Full bodied. Very slightly syrupy. Carbonation is very good for a BA brew.

Overall - Very pleased with this one. Balanced well with no one flavor dominating it too much. Big time sipper that deserves your full attention.
