Notes from a trip to Cordova AK June 2002

Good, rich, copper color with a good sized head that was lightly froathy and light tan in color. Good aroma of sweet hops, nice and fresh smell of malt as well. Taste the malt right away then sweetens a bit and covers nicely with a fresh hop finish. Sort of warmed as it went down. Good medium body and feel. I did enjoy this Winter Ale very much, but I think being there in the summer dampened the real spirit of what this brew can offer when its cold. I'm sure it would probably be even better then.

Thanks Fro for this bottle.

Pours a clear medium copper with a small fuzzy off-white head. The foam settles after a minute and leaves no real sign of lacing on the walls of the glass. A small ring remains around the edge of the glass.

Warm malt aroma with a nice slightly dry sweetness to it. Notes of warm caramel and a hint of toffee with a bit of biscuit and a touch of spruce tips. Slightly toasty malt aroma there too. Bit of copper malt mingled in.

Smooth malty body with a nice caramel flavor and a bit of toastiness. Lots of fruitiness with the spruce tips just making themselves known. Apple and pear are there in light order. Touch of berry. Smooth, low carbonation makes for easy drinking.

A tasty winter brew.

Pours a caramel color with a foamy cream head. The smell has a bit of pine, but it's not too strong. The taste is very crisp and light. Very easy to drink. Light for the posted style, but a solid enough brew.

I would assume that Alaska would know about winter. The pour is a amber color with a darker red hue and good clarity. A pour head that had very little staying power as well.

The nose is good with a spicy aroma as a winter warm. Noticeable grainy malt essence and spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. Some pine notes as well as spruce too. At the end there is a slight acidic almost lemon zing to the end as well.

The taste is a little disappointing. The malt is rather limited and the spices are more in your face then should be. The spices leave a rather bready feel but there is a peppery finish that mixes with a dry almost chalk like finish in the beer that leaves off flavor. I know its a winter warmer and the spices should be there, but the balance is off. To boot there is a fruitiness of cherries in the background that just doesn't mix.

The body is dry and the chalky flavor is a real deterrent in the beer. Carbonation is a little low but acceptable. The beer is smooth and easy to drink. Overall maybe this beer has seen too much winter, but I could see real improvement for this beer in the future.

Pretty good brew. Not one of the best old ales I have tried, but decent enough. Lot’s of florally hops in the nose, a little lighter on the taste. Crisp finish.
