2002 bottled edition- Very, very dark brown color overall with deep ruby highlights within its realm of dark fog when held up to the light. Thin cocoa brown head that subsides quickly and leaves clear spotty lace.
Smell has lots of good sweet roastyness to it, deep and rich, thick sweetened chocolate layered on top of heavily roasted malts, small hops and a hint of smokey woodish earth lightly showing up as it warms with a note of coffee in it.
Taste is smooth and roasty sweet, light bitter sweet chocolate, lightly tangy sweet roasted malts. Well rounded and soft, a small amount of hops pleasantly keeps a nice bittering bite and balance over the roasty sweetness. Some coffeeish senses along with a gentle effervescense of smokeyness sneaks its way past the roasty sweetness as well. There's some dark fruity bread chewyness that reminds of a x-mas favorite of mine, a dark marble rye-cinnamon-cherry bread that makes it a pleasing memorable experience for me. Its not overly complex, it has very subtle qualities and when served at the desired warmer temp the smokey characteristics become a bit more noticeable, but never enough to overwhelm.

Feel is smooth and creamy, medium, close to full body, lightly chewy aspect with a sticky roastyness covering the tongue and mouth in the finish; my favorite part of this beer, or for any porter for that matter.
A very smooth drinkin' porter that goes down pretty easy. Its not quite as bold or rich as some, but its a definate keeper; worth the effort of finding and a must try for all.

Pours a dark black color with some nice creamy tan head.

Tons of smokiness in the nose of this bad boy. Hard to pick out much more with the smokiness being so overwhelming.

Taste is also dominated by the smoke. Some hints of caramel and woodiness. Very smooth, creamy mouthfeel with an almost gritty finish.

They sure don't mess around with the smoke in this one. I'm diggin it.

The pour is a dark black color with some light brown colors around the edge. When held to the light there is a ruby hue to it as well. There is a nice frothy head that has a tan color that remains through out the tasting but does hide to the side of the glass.

The nose varies per beer but there is a nice malty essence to it. Smoke flavors are the most significant smell. The nose varies from a beef jerky to a very noticeable smoked salmon. Im not a big fish fan, so I didn't really appreciate it too much, but my wife had no problems taking it. So the smell is very unique in that aspect.

The taste varies just as much. Similar with the nose there is a malty backing and a salmon flavor that is very distinguishable. The salmon flavor did vary from very noticeable to a light hint in the background. If it was light there was more of a smokey presence. The malt balanced well with some light astringent malt in the backing. Very smooth overall and a somewhat hop backing. Although the hops play a minor role overall.

So with this review, it should be noted that I am not a "fishy" fan at all. So I will age most that I have and see how they do over time.

2004 vintage. Very dark brown with some garnet highlights on the edges. Brown head. Light lace. Dark chocolate, vanilla, and smoke. Amazing. The smoke is not the main player here. The flavor is like sex in a glass. Some smoke, chocolate, vanilla, ash, marshmallow, and lightly bitter. Rich on the palate. Bamberg aint got shit on this.

2005 bottle from Kegergator a while back

Almost black color. Smell was great, after three years the smell still had that strong signature smoke smell. Taste followed the smell, but was more balanced. Smoked malts still dominated, but also got a very slight bitter chocolate.

Overall, this one is probably the best smoked beer of any style I've ever had. Absolutely loved this bottle and will try to get more.

Vintage 2005.

A - Body pours super dark brown, bordering on black. Opaque. Starts with a one finger dark tan head that is reduced to whisps on the surface and a ring around the glass within a minute or so.

S - Big and smoky. Smells a lot like smoked salmon. Smoky, roasty, malts. I can get just a bit of chocolate in the back here, but this is really all about the smoke.

T - Very much the same as the smell, but not quite as overpowering. I have had a couple smoked beers in the past that the smoked fish taste made me drainpour them, but this one is much more pleasant. Toasty, smoked malts, along with a touch of coffee and dark chocolate.

M - Medium bodied with light carbonation.

D - I am shocked that I like this given the smell. Becomes increasingly easier to drink with each sip. Very nice.

Thanks to Westsidethreat for the bottle.

Pours awesomely, very dark, with a nice dark tan head. nice lacing. Smell is great, smokey, very. A hint of alcohol. HOLY SMOKER, HACK! This thing lives up to it's name. Finishes clean, with a decent amount of smoke in the after taste
